My passion for working with yarns, colours and textures has been reignited during 2020 and it is my pleasure to offer the results for sale here, through ‘Pearl’s World’. It has taken a global pandemic and redundancy to reconnect me with the joy and passion that I feel when creating through the medium of yarn in all their glorious colours and textures. I want to share this passion and have created ‘Pearl’s World’ to share the results and in the future, hope to offer tutorials, yarns and knitting tools to inspire you all to experience this joy. It is incredibly satisfying seeing the result of an idea scribbled on a page, brought to life in textured, colourful knitted form. Children especially love seeing their drawings come to life as a soft cuddly toy and perhaps it will encourage them to pick up needles and learn a craft that studies have shown helps with the release of serotonin, the chemical transmitter that helps regulate anxiety, happiness, and mood. It has certainly helped me and I hope you enjoy the results.
I gained a BA (Hons) Textiles/Fashion degree from Middlesex University in the 80’s specialising in constructed textiles/knitwear creating textured, colourful children’s knitwear for my degree show at Centre Point. The knitting pattern for a handknitted child’s dress was featured in Tessa Watts-Russell’s book of ‘Nursery Knits’. I travelled to South Africa to visit family, and stayed for 9 years during which time I worked firstly for the Frame Group (at a time when they were the largest yarn manufacturer in the southern hemisphere), marketing and promoting yarns through designing and writing knitted patterns for fashion shows and magazines, running knitting workshops and organising in-store pattern and yarn promotions. I moved on to Unispin design studio for the Union Spinning Mills, promoting Sirdar yarns in a similar role. When they closed the studio I started my own business, ‘Pearl Designs’ and had several of the patterns from my children’s animal knitwear range featured in the local newspaper and the South African ‘Your Family’ magazine. On my return to the UK, my career as a knitwear designer was, of necessity, put on hold.

Take a look at what our previous customers hat to say:
"When Maya saw the picture of "Mixer", her face lit up and eyes grew wide... "Wow!!!" she said. When I asked her how she would describe what Pearl had created from her picture, she said "Awesome!" To see her picture come to life in a knitted product is a priceless gift. Thank you Pearl".
